1. Upper cover + lower body assembly

This structured instrument panel usually produces various interior configurations by changing the texture, color, grain and trim section of the upper cover. The upper cover can be set up as a soft cover or a hard cover as desired. To reduce costs, the body is usually designed using hard plastic molding. 

Advantages:The top and bottom can be designed with different draft angles, less difficult structural design, and rich configuration.

Disadvantages: mold costs rise, assembly time is more.

2 upper body assembly + lower decorative plate

This structure instrument panel is usually the type of “upper cover + lower body assembly” instrument panel, the difference is that the upper body is larger than the lower trim panel, and the different interior configuration is generally produced by changing the appearance of the trim. This type of upper body dashboard is generally soft and usually uses a closed-mold foam process. To reduce costs, the body is often designed to be molded in hard plastic 

Advantages:The upper and lower can be designed with different draft angles, the structure is less difficult to design, and the configuration is rich. 

Disadvantages:The mold cost increases, and the assembly time is more.

3 body assembly + decorative parts

Structure type instrument panel body is made of integral foam or hard plastic, and different interior configurations are produced by changing the appearance of the upper trim parts of the instrument panel.

Advantages:strong integrity of the instrument panel, the number of body molds is only one pair, the cost is relatively low.

Disadvantages:The body has only one main release direction, and the structure is difficult to design. For the upper and lower color separation of the dashboard, to be solved by spray painting.

4.Body skeleton assembly + outer cover

This structure type instrument panel outer cover can be adapted to different masking composite process.

Advantages:more blocks, relatively small mold size, difficult structural design, easy to control parts.

Disadvantages:The appearance parts are in many blocks, coordination is difficult to control, the number of parts is large, and the cost is relatively high.

Representative models:Ford Focus, GM Grandview, GM GL8, Mazda3

5.Upper body assembly + lower body assembly

This structure type instrument panel and upper and lower body dimensions are roughly the same, usually assembled by way of parts on the assembly line.

Advantages:Same size of upper and lower body, lower cost 

Disadvantages:The upper and lower body matching control mainly depends on the accuracy of BIW and instrument panel CCB. Modal stiffness of the whole cockpit system is difficult to control. More major assembly processes and relatively lower production efficiency.
